From the archives
One of the joys of this job is that I get to research some really interesting stuff - and while doing that research I happen upon other interesting stuff!
This photo is a great example. I was searching the DCC Archives for something about Dunedin's railway heritage, when I found this stunning pic of the Cumberland Street overbridge (or Jetty Street flyover - whatever you like to call it!). The pic is dated 1976 and shows the bridge under construction.
We talk about this bridge on our Vogel Street Walk. The bridge cuts straight across Vogel Street, breaking an otherwise uniform vista comprised of 1880s warehouses. It is quite disruptive, aesthetically speaking, and there's no doubt that the space beneath the bridge in Vogel Street used to be unappealing. But with some further interventions - the decision to make an adjacent street pedestrian-only, and the addition of some art and infrastructure - that space has come to life.
